What to Expect During A Quality of Life Assessment
We’ll get to know you and your pet.
Every family has a unique story. We’ll spend time listening to your concerns, learning about your pet’s medical history, daily routines, and the changes you’ve been noticing.
We’ll evaluate your pet’s comfort and quality of life.
Your veterinarian will gently assess your pet while they’re in the environment where they’re most relaxed, their own home.
We’ll consider factors like:
- mobility
- comfort
- appetite
- breathing
- hydration
- interaction with family
- overall daily function
We’ll discuss your options together.
Based on the assessment, we’ll talk through the next steps that best fit your pet’s condition and your family’s goals.
Recommendations may include:
- Continuing current care
- Adjustments through your primary veterinarian
- Comfort Care (Hospice)
- Monitoring your pet’s quality of life
- Or, when appropriate, discussing in-home euthanasia

They also walk you through what comes after euthanasia & we made those decisions prior to that day so there is less strain on an already incredibly hard moment.
The option of having him at home, where he was comfortable & able to go to sleep peacefully & feel no pain as he passed away, was a big comfort. I miss him so much & I appreciate everyone’s help on the team.”

Can hospice help my pet?
For many pets, yes.
Veterinary hospice (what we call comfort care) focuses on maximizing comfort and quality of life when a cure is no longer possible. Depending on your pet’s condition, hospice may include pain management, mobility support, nutritional guidance, environmental recommendations, and ongoing monitoring as their needs change.
Our goal is to help your pet experience as many comfortable, meaningful days as possible while supporting your family every step of the way.
Can my children be present?
Yes.
Every family is different, and there is no right or wrong way to involve children. If you’d like your children to be present, we’re happy to help create a calm, supportive environment and answer questions in an age-appropriate way.

Absolutely.

Both appointments are designed to help families better understand their pet’s quality of life, but they serve slightly different purposes.
An in-home Quality of Life Assessment allows one of our veterinarians to examine your pet in person, evaluate their comfort and mobility, and provide personalized recommendations based on both the physical exam and your family’s goals.
A Virtual Quality of Life Consultation is a conversation conducted by video. While we can’t perform a physical examination, it’s an excellent option for families seeking guidance, education, or help determining what type of care may be appropriate before scheduling an in-home visit.
Both are centered on the same goal: helping you make informed, compassionate decisions for your pet.
